YouthBuild Program Now Accepting Applications

Jan. 9, 2012

The city of Phoenix YouthBuild program is accepting applications for youth 18-24 years old who are seeking to earn a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and explore education, life skills and leadership focusing on “green construction.”

Interested applicants are required to attend one of three information sessions.

One session will be held 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the Emmett McLoughlin Community Training and Education Center, 1150 S. Seventh Ave.  A second session will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the West Valley Career Center, 1840 N. 95th Ave., Suite #160.

A third session will be held 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Department of Economic Security, 9801 N. Seventh St.

If chosen, participants must be available all day Monday through Friday for six to eight months, reside in the city of Phoenix and not have a high school diploma or GED.

The program offers weekly stipends while in training, plus additional performance incentives. YouthBuild participants will rehabilitate inner-city homes and build two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified platinum level homes in Phoenix.

The sustainable construction program gives young men and women the opportunity to earn their GED, gain valuable skills in “green” construction and train to become leaders in their community. Participants set personal, educational and career goals and develop an educational/professional portfolio. The “green” YouthBuild projects support building greener neighborhoods throughout the community, educating youth about the importance of creating a “green” city and training youth in sustainable construction.

YouthBuild is a national program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, which awarded the city of Phoenix a $1.1 million grant from the Employment and Training Administration. Phoenix YouthBuild is a partnership between the city's Community and Economic Development Department Phoenix Workforce Connection, Arizona Call-A-Teen Resources Inc., Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, Labor's Community Service Agency, Maricopa Skill Center and GateWay Community College.
