At Conference, Mayors Will Meet with Federal Leaders on Energy, Transit, Public Safety, Economic Development and Education

While attending the 80th Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors this week, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton will meet one-on-one with high-ranking federal leaders to discuss his economic, education and public safety policy goals.  Stanton arrived in Washington today, joining 250 mayors to talk job creation, transit and homeland security.

“For our region to recover economically and be globally competitive, Washington must listen to our needs,” Stanton said. “We want to infuse sustainability concepts into everything we do in Phoenix, and I want to make sure Washington has our back and shares our priorities. I also want to make sure our region is on track for investments to expand Light Rail and other transit projects that are vital to our economic future.”

To press his agenda, Stanton also has organized several meetings on his own with key federal leaders. Stanton’s agenda includes:

• Discussing sustainability with U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu
• Meeting with Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff about regional transit needs
• A public safety discussion with U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano

In addition, Stanton will gather ideas for his Mayor’s Futures Forum on Education during U.S. Conference of Mayors sessions with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.

The conference concludes on Friday.
