Dog lovers and their pets are invited to join Councilman Tom Simplot for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, to celebrate improvements to the city of Phoenix’s off-leash activity area at Steele Indian School Park, 300 E. Indian School Road.  The improved dog park is in the northern part of the park, adjacent to the Seventh Street entrance.

“This is a welcomed addition to Steele Indian School Park for dog owners and our four-legged friends,” said Councilman Simplot.  “Now our furry family members will have their own place to enjoy the outdoors and run freely.  I thank our central Phoenix residents for their passion and patience for making this new green pet-friendly space a reality.”

Wag-n-Wash, Noble Beast and Smelly Dog, three local businesses who specialize in pampering family pets, will be at the ribbon-cutting event with special treats.

The improved off-leash activity areas replace the park’s .8-acre granite dog park and feature sprinkler-irrigated grass separated into a one-acre area for large dogs and a .63 acre for smaller dogs, double-gated entrances and an adjacent chilled drinking fountain.  Each area also has ADA-compliant paw-shaped pathways.  The improvement project cost slightly more than $100,000 and was funded by proceeds from the Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative.
