The city of Phoenix has begun work on a new traffic signal at the intersection of 51st Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road. The work will be phased over the next few months with activation of the signal planned for early 2012.
The project was first initiated by calls from a neighborhood leader concerned about increased traffic in the area. With a new LDS temple being constructed, even more traffic is anticipated, making the neighbors anxious about safety issues.
“Neighborhood safety is a priority for me,” said Vice Mayor Thelda Williams, who represents the area. “I listened to the residents’ concerns and worked closely with city and the LDS leaders to make this new traffic signal a reality.”
The traffic signal is estimated to cost $175,000 and will be jointly funded by the city and the LDS church.
