Cultural Cup Food Bank Discussed at Brown Bag Series

Nov. 3, 2009

How one woman’s experience led her to create an organization that provides culturally appropriate meals to hundreds of people each week will be discussed at the free Faces of Diversity Brown Bag series noon Friday, Nov. 20, at the city of Phoenix Personnel Department, first floor training room, 135 N. Second Ave.

Zarinah Awad, executive director and founder of the Cultural Cup Food Bank, will share her personal experiences with the nonprofit organization and why she created it. The food bank provides culturally appropriate meals to individuals in need, while respecting their cultural, religious and dietary needs. In addition to supplying food, the organization offers a weekly free medical clinic for those without insurance.

After being told by a food bank volunteer that “beggars can’t be choosers” when she returned food because it was restricted by her religion, she decided that one day she wanted to help people who need assistance meet their specific needs. After 10 years, Awad and a host of volunteers now serve 300 families per week throughout the Valley.

The free series is sponsored by the Phoenix Human Relations Commission and the city’s Equal Opportunity Department. It features dynamic people telling their stories about diversity.  Bring your lunch and enjoy a cultural experience. No reservation is needed.
