Join Vice Mayor Tom Simplot and Seventh Avenue Merchants at Crosswalk Celebration

Vice Mayor Tom Simplot and Street Transportation Department staff will join community leaders and business owners at the commemoration of a new pedestrian signal 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Seventh and Glenrosa avenues. The celebration coincides with First Friday festivities in the Melrose area.

The High Intensity Activated CrossWalk Pedestrian Beacon (HAWK) is a new traffic control device in Phoenix that makes crossing busy streets easier for pedestrians.

“The Seventh Avenue Merchants Association, neighborhood leaders and I have been working to make this safe crossing a reality for some time now,” said Simplot. “This new pedestrian signal symbolizes the impact of community participation.”

The HAWK consists of a RED-YELLOW-RED signal format for motorists. The signal remains off for vehicle traffic until a pedestrian activates the system by pressing a button.
