Mayor Gordon and Councilman Simplot Praise Bridge Funding
Mayor Phil Gordon, Councilman Tom Simplot, west Phoenix community leaders and the Isaac School District community today celebrated President Bush’s signing of a bill that includes critical funding for a pedestrian bridge for a west Phoenix school.
Money for the bridge was included in the $286 billion federal transportation bill signed into law this week. The bill includes $2.4 million to build a pedestrian and bicycle bridge near 34th Avenue and McDowell Road that will lead to and from Isaac Middle School. Total estimated costs for the structure are approximately $4 million.
“Thanks to the continual work of the Isaac School Board and area residents and the dedication of Congressman Ed Pastor, this bridge is one step closer to construction,” said Simplot. “The bridge will keep hundreds of students safe from traffic danger. The first step in getting an education is getting to school safely.”
Earlier this year, Phoenix released a feasibility study for the bridge, citing high traffic and a large student population as potential risk factors. Several accidents have occurred at the intersection in recent years.
