Volunteers Needed for Day of Service to Celebrate the Birthday of Cesar Chavez

The city of Phoenix in collaboration with the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation is calling for volunteers to help facilitate a Day of Service on Saturday, March 28 in recognition of Cesar Chavez’s birthday.

District 7 Councilman Michael Nowakowski is spearheading the planning efforts to keep Chavez’s legacy of service alive. The Day of Service will include a morning youth conference and an afternoon community fair.

“The Day of Service is about empowering people from all walks of life. We’re working with youth because they’re our leaders of today and we must give them the tools they need to change the world. We’re teaching nonviolence because it’s time to take back our neighborhoods,” said Nowakowski.

Students selected from Phoenix-area high schools will learn about Cesar Chavez and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s belief in non-violence at the youth conference. The session will close with a community canvass to share information on non-violence in the surrounding neighborhood. The conference host is the First New Life Missionary Baptist Church, 1902 W. Roeser Road.

The community fair will showcase community services from the city of Phoenix and local social service agencies. The fair will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Lindo Park, 21st Avenue and Roeser Road. The fair is free and open to the public.

Volunteers are needed to assist with this event. Anyone interested in volunteering can email Nikki Hicks with the District 7 Council Office at nikki.hicks@phoenix.gov or call 602-261-8204 to sign up.
